A Hot Topic: Acid Reflux

People with acid reflux find comfort sleeping in a favorite chair, sometimes never returning to their bed.

Acid reflux is often just one of many digestive symptoms that can result from poor digestion, food intolerances, chronic stress, gut infections, and other factors.  Up to 15 million people have a condition called acid reflux or GERD.  GERD occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter, a kind of trap door into the stomach, doesn't close properly. Stomach contents leak back into the esophagus, causing the burning sensation called heartburn. Heartburn that occurs more than twice a week may be considered GERD and can eventually lead to more serious health problems.

Despite what the commercials say, GERD is not caused by too much stomach acid.  It's caused by acid in the wrong place -- our esophagus.

Digestion is a metabolic issue and so is acid reflux:

One study of 155 healthy people who had used antacids for long periods of time found that 47% suffered some erosion of the esophagus. Regular antacid use also impairs the stomach’s ability to digest protein. Finally, without the right amount of stomach acidity, “friendly” bacteria that contribute to digestion die, leaving you at risk for low-level microbial infections that can lead to chronic indigestion.

Should we take a pill?

Heartburn remedies are among the biggest selling drugs of all time. But you should think long and hard before you pop that Pepcid.

Stomach acid is required for good digestion. Poor digestion produces heartburn. Your health is riding on your body's ability to absorb nutrients.  People with heart-burn take antacids.  Antacids reduce stomach acid. Oh no-more heartburn!

What About Side Effects?

“If you are taking Proton-pump-inhibitor drugs like Prilosec, Nexium, Tagamet, etc. these can reduce the acidity of the stomach, but in so doing create a more favorable environment for bad bacteria such as H. Pylori.”  Our gut needs good bacteria for good health. They go hand and hand.

Nearly every disease originating in the human body is due to or accompanied by the excessive formation of different kinds of acids in the system, the most important of which are uric, carbonic, sulphuric, phosphoric and oxalic acids. (Nature Cure by Henry Lindlahr, MD)

Unfortunately, medications for GERD may increase the risk of certain cancers and change our delicate pH balance. These are serious health concerns, and it's pretty clear that in this case, the "cure" of acid-blocking drugs are worse than the "disease" of GERD.  "Blocking stomach acid, also increases our risk of developing small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.” (taken from Digestive Wellness by Elizabeth Lipski.)

Antacids can result in issues in other areas:

1- Vitamin B-12 deficiency may be caused by the acid-suppressing drugs that people are taking (Previcet and Prilosec)

2 - A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that chronic use of acid-blocking drugs leads to an increase in the development of osteoporosis and increase in hip fracture because blocking acid prevents the absorption of calcium and other minerals necessary for bone health. Antacids interfere with the absorption of copper:

Copper is an essential mineral required by the body for bone and connective tissue production, and for coding specific enzymes that range in function from eliminating free radicals to producing melanin.  A deficiency in copper can lead to osteoporosis, joint pain, and lowered immunity.

You can't assimilate nutrients until they have been adequately broken down by digestion:

Antacids neutralize the acids in our stomach, making it difficult to break down foods into small enough particles to be absorbed. Once partially digested foods leave our stomach, our body treats this partially digested food, as foreign. Neurological side effects:

1 - Taking certain types of medication to deal with heartburn and excess stomach acid may increase the risk of cognitive impairment in the elderly, according to a report in the August issue of the Journal of the American Geriatric Society. The drugs in question, called histamine-2 receptor antagonists or H2As, include popular medicines such as Zantac and Pepcid.

2 - Antacids taken to fight indigestion actually diminish the enzymes needed to digest foods and nutrients critical to proper brain function.

 Antacids merely mask symptoms instead of handling the real problem:

Gurkipal Singh of Stanford University reported that people taking antacids and H2-blockers suffered more than twice as many serious gastrointestinal complications than those given placebos.

What could make normal stomach digestive fluids flow up where they don't belong?  One is overeating.  One can be from eating an abundance of pesticides and chemicals in our food. Make Food Your Friend

Take a few minutes to conjure up in your mind the image of two women.  One thing they have in common is that they both love to eat.  The first woman loves the food she’s known all her life – Big Macs with the side of fries and the extra-large Diet Coke, of course.  It might be Wendy’s another day, Kentucky Fried Chicken the day after that.  More often than not, she grabs her food in a bag handed to her through a drive through window, and will have finished the meal before she gets home.  She doesn’t cook – she’s usually too hungry when it’s mealtime to take the time to cook, and anyway, the food tastes better soaked in lard and fried in grease.  She may socialize with comfort food, fried chicken and potato salad at a church social, followed by apple pie that is likely to be bought at the grocery store, where they’ve been sitting prettily on the shelf thanks to the preservatives used to keep them looking good.  This woman’s approach to food, the food she loves, is almost frantic.  She loves it so much, she just can’t wait to eat it.  During the day, she may curb her hunger between meals with a Snickers bar or maybe even a “healthy” granola bar or serving of sugary yogurt.  She can’t go to bed without a helping of Ben and Jerry’s – that stuff is to DIE for.  She eats it as if she would die without it, and the fact is, she’s dying because of it.

Can you picture her?  She may be skinny, but more than likely she’s overweight.  For sure her skin isn’t as clear and bright as it could be.  She isn’t grounded.  Food rules her life, and she loves this food.  But it doesn’t love her back.  She suffers from many issues including digestion, stress, hormone, sleep, hair, skin, and mood.

Picture the second woman.  She loves her food, too.  But she loves it in a wholly different way.  She strolls through the farmer’s market on a Saturday morning.  She takes her time inspecting and admiring the fruits and vegetables in the produce bins.  She loads her basket with carefully chosen greens, artichokes, carrots, onions, organic peppers and sweet potatoes.  She adds fresh strawberries, kiwi, melons, and apples.  She might choose an organic chicken and some duck eggs from the same farmer.  She talks to the farmers, asks about their crops and harvests.   Whatever she can’t find she picks up the local grocery store – a little quinoa, spices, olive oil, beans and a bottle of organic red wine.  Perhaps she even has her own garden, where she grows her own eggplant, tomatoes and bib lettuce.  When she gets home she takes her time cooking an organic veggie chili. She cuts the onions, peppers, sweet potatoes and carrots, puts them in the crockpot with the beans adding some tomatoes, kale and spices.  The house fill with the aroma.  She uses her mothers favorite recipe to bake her artichokes.  She makes a salad and pours some wine.  Her company arrives to a meal they’ll all share and savor together.

I’m sure you can picture this second woman, too.  A healthy glow to her skin, a genuine smile.  A peace and serenity about her.  She’s not frantic. She’s not sick.  She’s at peace with herself, and with her food.  The two go hand in hand.

Now – who loves food more?  I mean, truly loves it?  Respects it?  Honors it?  And enjoys it in a peaceful, dignified, grounded way?

The first woman claims she loves food, but the food is her enemy.  It controls her, and if she wanted to “diet,” to lose weight or otherwise get control of herself, she would easily see food as an obstacle to her goals.  Right now, food is something she is panicked about, desperate for, and grabs when she feels she is empty and needs to fill herself up – very much like a dysfunctional relationship, in fact!  If she wanted to change her habits, food would be something she’d have to manage, deprive herself of, conquer and defeat.  It would be a constant struggle, because of her mindset.

The second woman already sees food as her friend, and she doesn’t seem deprived at all – does she?  She takes her time, appreciates the food – the way it looks, feels, smells.  She cooks it carefully, and serves it in the midst of joy and happiness.  She makes it with love.  And the best part?  The food she loves DOES love her back!  She’s healthy and happy, and the food fuels her.  When she eats, she spends more time thinking about what she’s putting in her body so she can live and thrive, not what she’s depriving herself of.

Food – real, whole, nourishing food – is your friend.  Thinking of  your food that way is important for health.  So go to your favorite farmers market and  discover the foods you love, and they will love you back.

Prevent Cancer With Food

Did you know that half of all Americans will eventually be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives? HALF.

That means, it's a flip of the coin whether or not you'll be one of them. That is, if you're not one of the Americans who first goes down with a heart attack - which happens around twice every minute of every day.

Too many of us are complacent about those odds, believing not much can be done to change what we collectively believe is an inevitable fact of American life. Cancer, we're told, is random, it's genetic, and sooner or later, it's going to get us.

But the truth is, a cancer diagnosis doesn't have to be a 50/50 proposition. In fact, what if you could up the odds to nearly 100% - a 100% chance you WON'T end up with cancer?

Modern medicine has been claiming for years that a cure is around the corner. But the best cure I’ve found is prevention. And prevention requires looking at the toxins in our environment, and mitigating their effects.

Instead of embracing pink ribbons and joining the 'race for the cure', perhaps we'd all be better served by a race to stop cancer in its tracks before it has a chance to grab hold of us.

Certainly, much of the cancer we see is due to environmental toxins and hazards that are difficult to combat, depending on where we've lived and worked. But the majority of cancers we see developing are heavily influenced by lifestyle choices, such as smoking and, yes, especially diet.

It might seem at first glance that it's not possible. But consider the standard American diet: lots of meat, dairy and animal products, high in starches and oils and sugar, massive amounts of processed foods and artificial ingredients, and very few fresh vegetables, fruits, and legumes. With a diet like this, it's very hard for the body to get the optimal nutrition it needs to stay well.  Of course, this includes making conditions ripe for cancer to develop.

Preventing cancer requires increasing the beneficial antioxidants and phytochemicals and cutting down or completely eliminating the toxins. To really protect yourself, the steps below are simple and easy.

  • Drink lots of clean, pure water to flush toxins from the body.
  • Eat more vegetables and fruits, especially raw and organic berries(to ensure they've not been treated with pesticides and chemicals)
  • Eat cruciferous veggies, cabbage, kale, garlic, onions, and mushrooms- evidence is growing to suggest that these vegetables have powerful anti-cancer properties. Eat green veggies 3 times a day!
  • Incorporate into your busy schedule a good nights sleep, to assist the body in releasing toxins.
  • Drastically cut down your consumption of rBGH meats and dairy, and refined flours and sugar.  Completely eliminate processed meats, fast foods, gluten products, and all other foods void of nutrition.
  • Avoid toxic cleaning chemicals, dryer sheets, detergents, soaps, candles, floor cleaners, air fresheners, toxic candles and more in your home.
  • Avoid all Hand Sanitizers!

So, sure... we can race for the cure all we want. But if we put more effort into a push for prevention, there wouldn't be so much of a need for a cure.
